Conocer es computarTo know is to compute
Before the brain and before the idea, the cell tells what feeds it from what destroys it: in life, being and knowing are born together.
De dónde viene: del ordenador a la célulaWhere it comes from: from the computer to the cell
Para ir más lejos interroga al computador: Turing definió la computación como tratamiento de símbolos y Simon vio en los computadores sistemas de símbolos físicos (p. 46).Morin recalls that Dilthey and Husserl already sought the root of knowing in life, and that Piaget tried to think the isomorphism between biological and cognitive organization, though he stopped at self-regulation (pp. 45–46). To go further he questions the computer: Turing defined computation as the processing of symbols, and Simon saw computers as physical symbol systems (p. 46).
After Watson and Crick, biology imported from the computer the ideas of information and genetic program; Morin accuses it of hiding computation (p. 50). He draws on Gordon Pask, who conceived computing science as the science of all computation (p. 50), on von Foerster (p. 53) and on Maturana, for whom cognition depends on the subject's autopoiesis (p. 58).
Computación, no solo informaciónComputation, not just information
Computing is not calculating numbers: it is associating and separating, comparing, confronting. All computation combines four instances: information, signs and symbols, memory, and rules or software. Information alone is barely a mark; it only becomes information within a computation. That is why Morin objects to the field being called informatics: it wraps the wrapper inside the wrapped.
The artificial machine solves other people's problems; the bacterium computes for its own organization and reproduction. Morin calls computo that computation of itself and for itself, and joins it to being in a loop: I compute, therefore I am; I am, therefore I compute. Being a subject means placing oneself at the center of one's own world and distinguishing Self from non-Self.
Auto-exo-referenciaAuto-exo-reference
Referring to oneself is not enough: the living being refers to itself while referring to what it is not. In that gesture a principle of desire, egocentric, coexists with a principle of reality, objective. To fulfill its desire, the living being must respect reality; whoever fails cannot live.
Particles of two kinds reach a cell; its membrane lets some in and turns others away: that distinction is already an act of knowledge in the service of its own life.
Cotidiano · tu computador no tiene problemas propiosEveryday · your computer has no problems of its own
Your computer can diagnose, recognize shapes and reason; the Bacon program even rediscovered Kepler's third law and Ohm's law. But, as von Foerster said, machines solve our problems, not theirs. It does not repair or reproduce itself, and it has no need to tell what feeds it from what destroys it.
Biológico · la bacteria engañadaBiological · the deceived bacterium
A virus inserts its DNA into a bacterium's. From then on the bacterium mistakenly computes the virus's reproduction and its own death. The example shows that the identity produced by the computo is not absolute: the most elementary subject can be wrong about what is its own and what is foreign to it.
Social · los árboles que se avisanSocial · trees that warn each other
When part of the foliage of a poplar, a maple or an oak is destroyed, the tree synthesizes substances to repair itself and deter insects; neighboring trees of the same species react the same way, as if they had been warned. Without brain or nerves, the intercomputations of their cells sustain communication among kin.
Tres confusionesThree confusions
No es biologismoIt is not biologism
Rooting knowledge in life does not set biology against philosophy: the problem was first raised in philosophy, by Dilthey and Husserl. Morin also makes clear that knowledge cannot be reduced to computation, although it always includes it.
The vulgate of the genetic program copies the computer model. Morin proposes putting self-eco-organization and the computo in the place of the program, without forgetting the genetic engram. The living does not receive its instructions from outside: it produces, reproduces and organizes itself.
No es el Ego trascendentalIt is not the transcendental Ego
The subject born of the computo is not philosophy's founding consciousness. It is a living subject that emerges from self-eco-organization, excludes others from its central place and at the same time includes its siblings, its offspring and its community.
Even if knowledge became differentiated and autonomous, it would remain inseparable from organization, from action, from being. Being, doing and knowing are, in the realm of life, originally undifferentiated, and when they become differentiated they will remain inseparable.Edgar Morin · El Método 3, p. 58Edgar Morin · Method 3, p. 58 (free translation)
It is in the section «Biology of knowledge», after discussing Maturana and recalling Saint Augustine's formula: I am, I know myself, I love myself. Morin notes that in the bacterium these three aspects are a single act, and concludes that knowing and being generate each other in a loop.
Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable
If the bacterium is already a subject computing for itself, the line between what knows and what does not becomes blurred. Morin even speaks of a cognitive dimension in plants. Many will find this an abuse of language; for him, it is the price of not separating life from knowledge.
Auto-exo-reference places egocentrism at the root of all knowing: the living being always places itself at the center of its world. This means that no knowledge, human knowledge included, fully escapes the centrisms of the self, the group or the ethnic community. Objectivity is possible, but always from a center.
Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today
Speaking of cognition in organisms without a brain no longer sounds so strange. Morin's proposal offers a framework for that research: describing molecules is not enough; we must think about the being that computes for itself.
Artificial intelligence systems solve ever more complex tasks, but they still solve our problems, not theirs. The distinction between artificial computation and living computo helps us think about what they lack and what they do not need: they do not produce themselves, nor do they risk their existence in what they do.
