We know the world because we are part of it and at the same time step away: we reach it only by translating it, and only in one band.

De dónde viene: Kant corregido por la evolución y por la físicaWhere it comes from: Kant corrected by evolution and by physics

From Leibniz he takes the first looped conception of senses and mind (p. 232), from Spencer-Brown the parable of a cosmos that would have to separate from itself to know itself (p. 225), and from Changeux and von Foerster the idea of translation (p. 227).

He follows Bernard d'Espagnat and his veiled reality, notes the convergence with David Bohm (p. 234), cites the mathematician Hartong on the cave (p. 235) and Jean Ladrière on the correspondence between theory and reality (pp. 238–239).

To know, one must belong to the same world as what is known, be separated from it, and communicate across that separation. The brain, enclosed in the skull, opens onto the world through its senses. That is why human knowledge is, Morin says, open in what closes it and closed in what opens it.

Kant was right that the mind imposes its forms on phenomena. But those forms did not fall from the sky: they took shape over the course of evolution, absorbing the order and organization of the world. What in each individual comes before experience is, in the history of the species, a product of it.

We clearly perceive only one band of the real, between the microphysical and the cosmophysical, where space and time keep their distinct form. That band is no illusion: its beings and forms have their own consistency. But neither is it all of reality. Beyond lies a twilight zone and, at bottom, a Real that exceeds what can be thought.

Donde el mundo entra traducidoWhere the world comes in translated

Von Foerster wrote that outside us there is no cold or heat, only molecular speeds. Morin replies that in the middle band those speeds allow the organization of living beings that do feel cold or heat. The sensation is a translation, but it translates something real at the scale on which we live.

The alternation of day and night, and of the seasons, is built into the internal organization of plants and animals. Morin uses this fact to explain the a priori: just as the world's rhythms were inscribed in organisms, the world's order was inscribed in the cognitive structures that now allow us to know it.

Social · la objetividad se discuteSocial · objectivity is argued over

An isolated subject reaches objective knowledge only imperfectly. They need to communicate with others, to confront and to argue. Morin points out that scientific objectivity was born from the historical development of those procedures between subjects. Objectivity lies neither in the subject alone nor in the thing alone: it is built among many who belong to the same world.

Edgar Morin · El Método 3, p. 235Edgar Morin · Method 3, p. 235 (free translation)

It opens the section «The middle band» in the book's conclusions. Morin has just shown that twentieth-century physics reopened Kant's problem of the world in itself. Here he places our clear knowledge in one band of reality, to defend its consistency without confusing it with all of reality.

Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable

Morin admits that beyond the middle band reality takes on the face of chaos, nothingness or void, and asks whether our world might be a meager slice of a world with more dimensions. For anyone seeking firm ground, this opening onto an unspeakable Real is unsettling: knowledge advances, but toward a depth it will never exhaust.

Morin says so without consolation: separation is both the condition and the imperfection of knowledge. The more original and singular the knowing apparatus, the better it sees the world and the more foreign it becomes within it.

Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today

The idea that our categories took shape through evolution lives on today in evolutionary epistemology and in the cognitive sciences, which study how the brain builds perception from signals. Morin adds his own emphasis: that construction does not cut us off from the world, because the world is inscribed in whoever builds it.

Debates on the interpretation of quantum mechanics remain open. The relational, relative and multiple realism that Morin proposes does not settle them, but it offers a useful stance: accepting that the world of phenomena is real without claiming it is all of reality, and relativizing the notion of reality without falling into skepticism.
