What allows us to know is the very thing that limits knowing: recognizing the limits does not erase them, but it frees us from believing we have none.

De dónde viene: de Shannon y Pascal a un inventario de incertidumbresWhere it comes from: from Shannon and Pascal to an inventory of uncertainties

In the book's conclusions, Morin sorts the sources of uncertainty into seven groups, from the cognitive relation to sociocentrism (pp. 240–243). For the noise that degrades every message he turns to Shannon's theory (p. 241). For the black holes of knowledge he invokes Rousseau's Confessions and Jaynes's bicameral hypothesis (p. 244).

Para el tránsito al tomo siguiente se apoya en Changeux sobre el desarrollo del cerebro tras el nacimiento (p. 252).He takes from Manuel de Diéguez the idea that our explanatory principles become idols when we are unaware of them, and closes the balance with Pascal's line on man, judge of all things and sewer of errors (pp. 248–249). For the transition to the next volume he relies on Changeux on how the brain develops after birth (p. 252).

Discovering the limits of knowledge is not merely discovering limits: it is a conquest. It overcomes the limited knowledge that believed itself unlimited and makes it possible to build a meta-viewpoint from which the mind looks at itself in its rules and possibilities. The idea of unlimited knowledge is, Morin says, a limited idea.

Uncertainties come from everywhere: from translation and noise, from the environment, from the brain, from theories and logic, from egocentrism and culture. They cannot be eliminated without abolishing the knower. But once recognized, uncertainty no longer leads to error and drives us to investigate, verify, argue and devise strategies.

Verificadores en bucleChecks in a loop

We have the resistance of things, experimentation, exchange, logic, criticism, reflective consciousness and complex thought. But each one, used alone, turns against itself: criticism degenerates into hypercriticism, experience into hyper-empiricism, reason into rationalization. Their effectiveness depends on their working together.

A field of dots with a zone the eye cannot see; when the eye moves, the blind zone shifts but does not vanish. So are the limits of knowledge: they move, they are not abolished.

Tres terrenosThree grounds

The experience gathered over a lifetime is a valuable check. But Morin warns that it degrades, and even becomes an enemy of knowledge, when the conditions in which it was acquired change. What worked in another time or place can blind us precisely because it once worked.

Físico · un punto que quizá sea un mundoPhysical · a dot that may be a world

The eye catches only a narrow band of radiation and the ear a thin band of vibrations; where we see a dot there may be a world. Yet with instruments we make the invisible visible, follow the traces of particles and hear a murmur that comes from the edges of the universe and the origin of the world.

Social · el siglo que se creyó adultoSocial · the century that thought itself grown up

Morin closes the book recalling that the century of Stalin, Hitler and Hiroshima believed it had reached the supreme stage of thought and consciousness. Being unable to recognize that infantilism is, for him, the very sign of our infantilism. We are still in the prehistory of the mind, and the crisis reaches the principles of our knowledge.

En sus palabrasIn his words
“
We now realize that being unaware of the limits of knowledge was the greatest limit of knowledge. The idea that our knowledge is unlimited is a limited idea.
Edgar Morin · El Método 3, p. 240Edgar Morin · Method 3, p. 240 (free translation)

It comes in the section that opens the second part of the conclusions, devoted to the limits, uncertainties, blind spots and miseries of knowledge. Morin has just stated that possibilities and limits are inseparable. With this sentence he turns the recognition of limits into a gain and prepares the inventory of uncertainties.

Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable

Morin counts his own work among what the black holes can parasitize, and asks how he can know whether he is in thrall to the spirit of his time. No method gives him that guarantee. For anyone expecting a secure base from a book on epistemology, this ending, which turns suspicion on itself, is uncomfortable.

Every theory, scientific ones included, rests on unprovable postulates and unverifiable principles. Morin does not say this to equate science with opinion, but to recall that certainties are won in a dialogic that never ends. Science advances by increasing certainties and discovering uncertainties, and both are its progress.

Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today

Cognitive psychology has catalogued many biases, and statistics has made uncertainty an object of calculation. Morin's approach is broader: uncertainties are not faults to be fixed one by one, but features of the knower's condition, calling for strategy, dialogue and constant vigilance.

In times of abundant information and fast disinformation, the idea that checks only work together is practical. Comparing sources without logical criteria, or reasoning without looking at the facts, fails on its own. What Morin calls the dialogic of action, communication and reflection describes an everyday habit of verification well.
