Consciousness is the mind turning back on itself: a fragile lookout, always too far from and too close to the one who looks.
De dónde viene: del espejo de Hegel al chimpancé que se nombraWhere it comes from: from Hegel's mirror to the chimpanzee that names itself
Samuel Butler, José Delgado y Henri Poincaré le sirven para mostrar cuánto conocimiento se elabora sin que lo sepamos (p. 210).Morin starts from Hegel, for whom man, as mind, splits in two (p. 207). From Bateson he takes the line that what is mysterious is not the unconscious but consciousness, and from Schopenhauer the idea of an efflorescence of unconsciousness (p. 209). Samuel Butler, José Delgado and Henri Poincaré help him show how much knowledge is worked out without our knowing it (p. 210).
Discute la hipótesis bicameral de Julian Jaynes (p. 214) y cierra con la lechuza de Minerva (p. 219).For self-consciousness he cites Piccardo's je/moi pair and the Gardners' experiment with the chimpanzee Washoe (p. 211), and returns to his own book Man and Death to tie it to the archaic figure of the double (pp. 211–212). He discusses Julian Jaynes's bicameral hypothesis (p. 214) and closes with the owl of Minerva (p. 219).
Consciousness is reflection: the mind turns back on itself through language and splits into the one who thinks and what is thought. That splitting creates distance, and distance makes criticism and self-criticism possible. That is why consciousness is at once subjective and objectifying, foreign and intimate, peripheral and central.
On its own, consciousness knows almost nothing of the brain, the organism or the operations of thought. It emerges from an unconscious ground and gathers only part of what we know. Between the two lies a vague, shifting zone: consciousness can spread and act back on that ground, but it can also wither or sink into it.
Consciousness is historial: it is born in a society, with a language, and it is subject to history. It flickers, goes out, lets itself be parasitized by egocentrism and by the anguish of death. Morin does not deny that it can progress, but he holds that its progress is difficult and uncertain, and that the capacity for regression is inherent to it.
This is how Morin sees consciousness: an efflorescence that depends on everything it does not see.
Cotidiano · tengo fríoEveryday · I'm cold
We are only aware of the overall character of what we feel: cold, heat, hunger, unease. The brain computations that produce those sensations are invisible to us. The same happens when we move: following Delgado, Morin says that conscious will mostly just triggers mechanisms that organize themselves without us.
Biológico · Washoe ante el espejoBiological · Washoe before the mirror
The Gardners taught the chimpanzee Washoe a sign language that included her own name. One day they held a mirror up to her and asked who it was. Washoe answered «it's Washoe». Morin stresses that this first animal sign of self-consciousness needed both the mirror and language.
Social · los ritos ante la muerteSocial · rites in the face of death
Animals sense death and flee it, but they do not think it. When self-consciousness meets the consciousness of time, the consciousness of death appears. Morin sees there the origin of funerals, tombs, prayers, religions and promises of salvation: collective answers to an anguish that consciousness itself produces.
Tres confusionesThree confusions
No es una torre fijaIt is not a fixed tower
Consciousness works like a lookout from which the mind looks at itself without leaving itself. But it is not a stable building: it is a loop that produces itself. It can split into consciousness of consciousness, but not multiply without end; beyond that, it dissolves into reflections of reflections.
No es saber másIt is not knowing more
Advances in knowledge do not by themselves bring advances in consciousness. Becoming aware is more than acquiring information: it commits the subject to critically reorganizing what they know. That is why Morin says science, by fragmenting knowledge and leaving the subject in the shadows, has also produced regressions of consciousness.
No es consciencia totalIt is not total consciousness
A consciousness that took in the whole mind would abolish itself in the act: it needs some separation in order to exist. Morin illustrates this with samadhi, whose pure consciousness is reached as consciousness fades. And he warns that false consciousness is worse than unconsciousness, because it is convinced it is consciousness.
We are at once too far (through epiphenomenality) and too close (through egocentrism) to ourselves. This excessive distance weakens our consciousness, and this excessive closeness perverts it.Edgar Morin · El Método 3, p. 212Edgar Morin · Method 3, p. 212 (free translation)
It appears in the section on self-consciousness, right after he names self-deception as a key anthropological phenomenon. Morin uses it to explain why each of us knows ourselves so well and so badly, and from it he concludes that self-examination also needs the sympathetic and critical gaze of others.
Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable
If consciousness knows so little of the ground it springs from, no sincerity guarantees we are not deceiving ourselves. Morin does not say this to give up, but to ask something demanding: that self-examination also go through others. For anyone who trusts introspection as a safe source, that dependence on someone else's gaze is uncomfortable.
Morin calls our consciousness barbaric and places creation in zones where the conscious mixes with the dreamlike and the archaic. This unsettles both those who idealize lucid reason and those who idealize inspiration: neither is enough, and each can sterilize or drown the other.
Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today
Neuroscience today studies how much the brain processes without our noticing, and philosophy of mind still calls the problem of consciousness hard. Morin's proposal does not solve that problem, but it offers a framework: treating consciousness and unconsciousness as a circuit, not as two separate territories.
Education and mental health talk a lot about becoming aware. Morin reminds us that this is not passed on like a piece of data: it is a personal act that reorganizes what one knows and may question one's deepest viewpoints. You can help someone become aware, but no one can do it for them.
What does the small part of you that notices actually know about you?
What did you take for lucid awareness that later turned out to be a way of fooling yourself?
Which idea or solution came to you suddenly after a long time of not thinking about it?
Who helps you see yourself when you are too close to yourself?
Which act of awareness truly changed the way you live, and not just what you knew?
At what moments does your awareness switch off without your noticing?

If consciousness is a small tip over a vast ground, we still need to ask how this limited mind reaches the world: the mind in the world.
