Error does not feel like suffocation: that is why knowledge must turn toward itself and look into its own abyss.

De dónde viene: la crisis de los fundamentosWhere it comes from: the crisis of foundations

The book opens with an epigraph from Schiller and a line from Descartes on error that does not look like error; then it recalls that Marx and Engels denounced humanity's false conceptions and fell into the same trap (p. 17). With Gusdorf he speaks of a pathology of knowledge, and with Wojciechowski (1978) of modern ills inseparable from scientific progress (pp. 21–22).

The crisis of foundations runs through philosophy (Kant, Nietzsche, Heidegger and his groundless ground) and then science: the Vienna Circle (1925-1936), Wittgenstein and Hilbert seek certainty; Popper shows that verification is not enough; microphysics and Gödel's theorem crack logic (pp. 22–23). Mugur-Schachter and Popper describe what remains in place of the foundation (p. 24).

Just ask what knowing is and the notion bursts: perception, representation, judgment, calculation, belief, intuition, theory, myth. A reflection of things or a construction of the mind? Do we grasp the real or its shadow? What is most intimate and familiar turns strange as soon as we try to know it, and knowledge finds zones of ignorance within itself.

Every act of knowing joins physical, chemical, cerebral, psychological, linguistic, cultural and social processes. But our culture divides those pieces among disciplines that do not talk to each other: the mind goes to metaphysics, the brain to the natural sciences, information to physics. Each fragment ignores the global face it belongs to.

Neither empirical nor logical verification is enough any longer to ground knowledge. The real becomes a frontier between the conceivable and the inconceivable; logic cannot close in on itself. Morin does not take this as defeat: knowing there is no foundation is already a first piece of knowledge, and doubt can be a stimulus.

Concentric circles sink toward a dark center while a point looks inward: knowledge questioning itself finds, at its own heart, a zone it cannot light up.

Tres terrenosThree grounds

You eat without knowing the laws of digestion and breathe without knowing those of breathing. If something fails, suffocation or poisoning is felt at once. Knowledge is different: you can know without knowing knowledge, and when you are wrong the error gives no warning, because it presents itself as truth.

Physics promised to reach the ultimate bricks of the universe. It reached the particle and found it turned into a frontier notion: wave and corpuscle at once, elementary unit and inseparable. Impeccable order gave way to a mix of order, disorder and organization. Progress itself brought us closer to something that defies our logic.

Social · la Torre de Babel del saberSocial · the Tower of Babel of knowledge

Knowledge grows exponentially and each specialist knows less and less of what the others know. The university and research, refuges of free thought, also produce the mutilation of knowledge. Morin speaks of a new obscurantism that does not come from ignorant corners, but from the summits of culture.

En sus palabrasIn his words
“
Since we are living through what is surely the most exhilarating age for the progress of knowledge, the fruitfulness of discoveries, the elucidation of problems, we hardly notice that our unheard-of gains in knowledge are paid for with unheard-of gains in ignorance.
Edgar Morin · El Método 3, p. 21Edgar Morin · Method 3, p. 21 (free translation)

It is in the section «The pathology of knowledge» of the general introduction. Morin has just described how closed disciplines and the exponential growth of separate bodies of knowledge make everyone ignore more of what is known. The sentence shows the double face of progress: light and darkness are born of the same process.

Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable

Morin points at the producers of knowledge: scientists and academics who still believe they act as enlightened minds while feeding an obscurantism they do not see. The charge is uncomfortable because it does not come from an enemy of science, but from someone who admires it and asks scholars themselves to look at the effects of what they do.

If neither logic nor experience offers a certain foundation, from where do we judge what is true? Morin offers no new ground; he offers an attitude: living with doubt and relativity without falling into anything goes. For someone seeking certainty, that answer may seem insufficient, and Morin accepts that it is.

Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today

There are more journals, more subdisciplines and more data than ever, and it is harder and harder for anyone to see the whole. The warning about gains in ignorance describes well the experience of someone looking for a clear answer and finding mountains of results that do not talk to one another.

Debates on misinformation often assume that error comes from the ignorant. Morin reminds us that it is also born in the most educated circles, in the form of reason or science. That calls for a vigilance that begins with oneself: asking how what one takes for granted was formed.
